World governing body Fifa lifts the suspension that prevented Nigeria from taking part in all international competitions.

Fifa punished the African country after its government replaced the Nigeria Football Federation board with a sole administrator.

The nation met Fifa's conditions to lift the ban on Thursday when a regional high court quashed an order stopping the NFF board from office.

Great Britain's women's team lose 11-5 to the Netherlands in the European Championships, in what could be their last tournament.

UK Sport has cut the funding to water polo, meaning the team will be disbanded unless a successful campaign leads to qualification for the World Championships in 2015. GB lost 9-7 to Greece in their first group game in Budapest, Hungary.

Uefa has changed the rules on yellow cards to make it harder for players to be suspended for the Champions League and Europa League finals.

The European governing body has decided that yellow cards accrued will be wiped out after the quarter-final stage.

Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso missed last season's Champions League final after picking up a third caution in the semi-final against Bayern Munich.

British number three James Ward is out of the Claro Open Colombia after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Jimmy Wang.

World number 152 Ward was aiming to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final since Queen's Club three years ago after advancing through the first round when Matt Ebden retired from their match while trailing 6-4 3-0 on Wednesday.

But the 27-year-old Londoner could not get through the second round as Wang broke him four times on the way to a 6-3 6-1 victory.

Liverpool forward Iago Aspas joins La Liga club Sevilla on a season-long loan after passing a medical with the Europa League champions.

The deal gives the Spanish side the option of offering the 26-year-old a three-year permanent contract once the loan deal expires.

Aspas joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo last summer for a fee of £7m. But the Spaniard made only 14 appearances for the Reds - nine of them as a substitute - and scored just one goal.

The 23-year-old was rock bottom after hitting a first round 90 at Hoylake on Thursday, the worst round seen at the Open since 1999.

"Well, today was better," Macpherson tells reporters. "I actually hit the ball in play. Today was the not the best of my ability, but it was certainly a lot closer."

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal insists he will decide where his future lies when he returns to Italy for pre-season training.

The Chilean international, 27, has been linked with a move to either Manchester United or Real Madrid.

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp says he wants to see England develop their own brand of football and believes he could offer some guidance if approached by the Football Association.

There has been a clamour for England to adopt the approach set out by World Cup winners Germany, who drew plenty of plaudits for how they played their football.

"How do we play the game, what is the England style of play? Everyone should play the same way, under-17s and under-18s, we should be playing in the same way," says Redknapp. "I see people getting involved coaching England's younger teams and are they people who want to play football? I don't think they are."

South Africa's Eastern Province suspend club rugby matches this weekend as referees down whistles in protest at escalating abuse from the stands.

Match officials have complained at what they see as escalating verbal and physical harassment from spectators, which at times has left them having to be protected by players.

"We initially received a notification from the Referees Society that they were downing tools due to the ongoing harassment that their members were exposed to at club games," EPRU President Cheeky Watson tells South Africa's Sport24.

John Ryan, the businessman who was set to take over Doncaster Rovers with One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson, says the deal is off.

A statement released on Thursday, purporting to be sent on behalf of the Tomlinson Ryan Trust, said the deal was "in serious doubt" because of issues with the crowd-funding initiative. He said the deal has collapsed over a lack of Football League approval.

Turkish club Besiktas announce the signing of Chelsea striker Demba Ba in a deal worth £4.7m. Ba arrived in Istanbul on Wednesday to undergo a medical and pose with the number nine jersey he will wear next season.

The 29-year-old former Newcastle forward only started 23 of his 51 appearances for the Blues, scoring 14 goals as he found himself third choice behind Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres.

Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who made 40 appearances in the Champions League, Uefa Cup and Europa League at Rangers, says the draw could hand them a tricky trip as they aim to reach the Europa League group stage.

"It really depends where the draw sends you and I had the best of both worlds," he said. I've experienced qualifying and not qualifying and it's definitely difficult to go away to some of these places.

"I'm not so sure our first qualifier will be so glamorous, but we're seeded so that might make it a bit better."

A course marshal was hit by two golf balls within an hour at the Open at Royal Liverpool on Thursday.

Bill Davies was marshalling at the par-five 16th hole when he was hit on his leg by Rickie Fowler's ball, then on the shoulder by Charl Schwartzel's.

He said: "I wasn't too bad, but having two detonating things happening to you within three quarters of hour, then you start worrying."

Both golfers apologised to the marshal and gave him signed balls as a momento of the day.

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp says he hopes the signing of Rio Ferdinand will persuade Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker to join the newly-promoted Premier League club.

The Hoops have agreed a fee for 22-year-old Caulker, who has won one cap for England. But Redknapp says the player is also considering other offers.

"He's got a couple of other clubs interested in him but I think he feels if he was playing with Rio, it could help him get back into the England team," said Redknapp, who managed Caulker at Tottenham.

Newcastle Unitedrelease a statement expressing "great sadness" that two of their "most loyal" fans lost their lives on Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 which crashed on Thursday afternoon in Eastern Ukraine.

The two are named in the statement as John Alder and Liam Sweeney.

"John and Liam were travelling out to New Zealand together to support Newcastle United in the forthcoming Football United Tour, which takes place next week in Dunedin and Wellington," adds the statement.

"Both men were familiar faces at every Newcastle United away game and attended not only first team games but reserve and academy matches too."

Germany's World Cup-winning skipper Philipp Lahm, who has retired from international football, rang DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach this morning to tell him that he was quitting the national team.

"I very quickly realised that it was pointless trying to persuade him to reconsider his decision," says Niersbach.

"He was not just a superb player for 10 years in the national team, but also a complete role model. I thanked him for everything that he's done for the DFB."

The 30-year-old Bayern Munich player, who has won 113 caps, made his international debut in February 2004 in a 2-1 win over Croatia.

"I was particularly baffled to see England refusing to have a short leg in place for the vast majority of the day. I was similarly dismayed to see England persist with trying to blast out tail-enders through short-pitched bowling."

More on reports that Germany's World Cup winning captain Philipp Lahm is to retire from international football.

German newspaper Bild says the 30-year-old Lahm will continue playing for Bayern Munich, where he renewed his contract until 2018 shortly before the World Cup.

Bild did not give any specific reason for the decision, which could not be immediately confirmed with the team.

So, Rio Ferdinand is set for a quick Old Trafford return with his new team Queens Park Rangers on 14 September after joining the London club on Thursday.

Leicester are set to break their 14-year-old transfer record by signing Brighton striker Leonardo Ulloa for around £7m, reports BBC Radio Leicester.

The Argentine has flown home from the Seagulls' pre-season tour of Spain and is expected to join the newly-promoted Premier League club later.

Ulloa, 27, scored 16 goals in all competitions last season.

With the Commonwealth Games around the corner, one British big-name athlete will be missing. Olympic gold medal-winning heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill ‏is not going to Glasgow - because she has just given birth to her first child.

"Our beautiful baby boy Reggie Ennis-Hill was born yesterday. We couldn't be happier," tweeted the Sheffield-born athlete.

Manchester United are on their way to the United States with Louis van Gaal eager to get down to business with his new players. But what do Friday's English newspapers make of the Dutchman's first news conference in charge at Old Trafford?

The Daily Star's back page headline (above) is 'Top Van', with chief sports writer Jeremy Cross writing: "Van Gaal excuded confidence and belief." The Independent's Ian Herbert writes: "Van Gaal's grasp of the finer points of the English may be a bit shaky, but his air of independence could scarcely have contrasted more with David Moyes's beginnings in the very same room, 377 days ago."

The Times northern football writer James Ducker adds: "What really came across was Van Gaal's excitement about the job." And the Sun's Neil Custis writes: "Moyes looked like a kid whose Christmases had all come at once when he was introduced as Manchester United manager. Louis van Gaal is more like Santa himself."

On a similar theme, British rider Jonathan Tiernan-Locke has been banned for two years and stripped of his 2012 Tour of Britain title for an anti-doping violation.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) imposed the suspension after finding discrepancies in the 29-year-old's biological passport.

Team Sky responded by terminating Tiernan-Locke's contract "with immediate effect". He will be not be available to race again until 1 January 2016.

Disgraced former cyclist Lance Armstrong has talked with investigators about doping in the sport's past, says his attorney Elliot Peters.

The American, 42, met the Cycling Independent Reform Commission for seven hours in Washington DC in May. "It was a very good meeting," claims Peters.

Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles from 1999 to 2005 and handed a lifetime ban over his use of performance-enhancing drugs in 2012.

Arsenal have completed the signing of right-back Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old France defender has agreed a long-term contract with the Gunners.

"He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I'm confident he will fit in very well with us," said Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has moved to Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee on a six-year deal.

Kroos, 24, was a key player for Germany as they beat Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup and scored two goals during the competition in Brazil.

He was presented at the Bernabeu on Thursday in front of hundreds of Real Madrid fans after undergoing a medical.

Former England captain Rio Ferdinand joined Queens Park Rangers as a free agent after leaving Manchester United.

The 35-year-old links up with manager Harry Redknapp, who he previously played under at West Ham, after signing a one-year deal at the Premier League club.

"I had a lot of offers from all over the world but the draw for me was to play in the Premier League," he said. "It's not about money - I had loads of more lucrative offers available to me.

"I still feel I've got something to offer and I'm excited about helping this club cement its place in the Premier League."
